The number of seats you need to purchase depends on the maximum number of concurrent developers (in any continuous 24-hour period) contributing changes to the front-end code of the projects that use the Software. Put simply, count what's the highest number of developers on your team who will be contributing changes to the front-end code over any 24-hour period - that's how many seats you need to purchase.
What counts as a developer contributing changes?
Anyone making changes to the front-end of the code, including through a wrapper library, must be licensed. Anyone simply running the code (without making changes) does not need to be licensed.
For clarity:
- "front-end code" means any code that is executed in a browser.
- People who are solely executing the front end for testing purposes, such as verifying back-end changes, and are not contributing changes to the front-end code, do not need to be licensed.
What if I haven't purchased enough seats?
If you've realised you haven't purchased enough seats to account for all the developers in your team, you must purchase additional licenses by contacting sales@mui.com. They'll help make sure that the additional seats are purchased to co-terminate with existing licenses, usually by extending your existing seats so that all licenses expire 12 months from the time you purchase the new seats.
For example:
- Say you have a team of 6 developers.
- You purchased 4 MUI X Pro licenses on April 1st, 2025, that expire on April 2nd, 2026 thinking that only 4 developers would be contributing changes within a 24-hour period.
- You then realise that in fact sometimes all 6 developers on your team need to make changes within the same 24-hour period.
- So on July 1st, 2025 you reach out to purchase 2 more MUI X Pro licenses, which will expire on July 2nd, 2026.
MUI in this scenario will charge you full price for those 2 additional MUI X Pro annual seats, and then charge you to extend your original 4 seats to make sure they expire July 2nd, 2026, meaning you'll pay for an extra 3 months of access + support for your existing seats. You'll be issued a new license key that covers all 6 seats, co-termed to share the same expiration date.
